Catalyst takes you to the heart of the biggest science stories from Australia and around the world. This special ABC episode highlights collaborative exchanges between Geo-science Australia and the Malaysia Space Agency on solar (electromagnetic) storms.
Tune in to learn how geomagnetic storms, or space weather, can disrupt satellites and induce currents in long conductors (like power lines) on the Earth’s surface, overloading the electric system and damaging transformers. The collaborative work of Australia and Malaysia monitoring geomagnetic storms allows potential hazards to be mitigated, protecting communities by minimising the impact to vulnerable infrastructure such as such as pipelines and power grids.
The episode will be broadcast to Malaysian and Southeast Asian audiences on ABC Australia on Sunday 27th February, via: Astro, Unify TV, EnjoyTV, LongTV and Sirius Malaysia.
Broadcast in Australia on Tuesday 1st March and available for streaming via ABC Australia iview (international) and ABC iview (Australia only).
